On February 3, 2016 Vikram Punia, president of company «Pharmasyntez» took part in his meeting with President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. At the meeting the State President discussed the issues for the purpose of improvement of business climate with the core group of the Leaders Club, an informal association of small and medium business owners.

Vikram Punia offered compulsory licensing in Russia of the drugs to treat hepatitis. In his statement he noted: “Hepatitis is a great problem for Russian healthcare system. More than 2 million of people need treatment immediately. The therapy cost is about three million rubles per a patient, and treatment duration takes over a year. The way to address this catastrophic situation can be a mechanism of compulsory licensing. It would reduce the drugs ‘cost by a factor of tens and treatment duration up to three months. This mechanism is already applicable in BRICS countries”.

Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, delegated relevant authorities to investigate the possibility of introducing the practice of compulsory licensing to allow Russian pharmaceutical companies reproducing vital and essential patented drugs.
