TabletsCombination antiviral drug. Abacavir and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors that potently and selectively block HIV-1 and HIV-2 replication by undergoing metabolic activation by intracellular kinases to form their respective 5'-triphosphates which act as active metabolites. Lamivudine triphosphate and carbovir triphosphate (active metabolite of abacavir) are substrates and competitive inhibitors of HIV reverse transcriptase. Their main antiviral activity is mediated by the active metabolite incorporation into viral DNA which results in blocking the viral replication.
