TabletsSynthetic nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Its active ingredient is zidovudine. Intracellularly, zidovudine undergoes sequential phosphorylation into its active metabolite, zidovudine 5'-triphosphate. Zidovudine 5'-triphosphate inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase by terminating viral DNA synthesis after it is incorporated into the nucleotide chain. Zidovudine 5'-triphosphate weakly inhibits cellular DNA polymerases alpha and gamma.
When used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs, it increases CD4+ counts.
