TabletsAntivitral drug, HIV nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It selectively inhibits HIV-1 and -2 replication (including HIV-1 strains resistant to zidovudine, lamivudine, zalcitabine, didanosine, and nevirapine). Abacavir undergoes intracellular metabolism to its active metabolite carbovir 5'-triphosphate, an analogue of deoxyguanosine-5'-triphosphate. It mechanism of action is due to the inhibition of HIV reverse transcriptase resulting in termination of viral DNA synthesis and HIV replication blocking. It increases CD4 counts in blood and reduces levels of the viral RNA (including those in liquor).
