TabletsAntiviral agent. It is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor for the treatment of a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1. Efavirenz is intensively metabolised in the liver by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. In vitro studies show that CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 are the major isoenzymes responsible for efavirenz metabolism. As indicated by a number of studies, efavirenz acts as either an inhibitor or an inducer of CYP3A4, , depending on the dose.
Less than 1% of an efavirenz dose is excreted unchanged in the urine.
