Solution for infusionOsmotic diuretic. Mannitol elevates blood plasma osmotic pressure and filtration without subsequent tubular re-absorption resulting in retention of water in the tubules and increase in the urea volume. By increasing plasma osmolarity, it promotes enhanced flow of water from tissues (from the eyeball and brain, in particular) into the bloodstream. It produces a marked diuretic effect with an excretion of large volumes of osmotically free water, sodium, and chlorides without any significant excretion of potassium. It increases the circulating blood volume.
