Lidocaine is a short acting local anesthetic of the amide type. Its mode of action is based on reducing neuronal membrane permeability for sodium ions. It results in a reduced depolarization rate and increased excitation threshold, causing a reversible local anesthetic effect. Lidocaine is used for regional anesthesia in various parts of the body and control of arrhythmia. It has a rapid onset of action (about 1 and 15 minutes following an intravenous and intramuscular dose, respectively) and is quickly distributed into surrounding tissues. Its duration of action lasts for 10-20 and 60-90 minutes following an intravenous and intramuscular dose, respectively.
