Antineoplastic drug. It has a selective cytotoxic effect. In tumor tissue, capecitabine is converted into 5-fluorouracil by thymidine phosphorylase (a tumor angiogenic factor). In primary tumors, thymidine phosphorylase activity is five times more than in healthy tissue, therefore, 5-fluorouracil concentrations in tumor tissues are higher than those in plasma and in healthy tissues. 5-Fluorouracil is converted into 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine 5'-monophosphate and 5-fluorouridine triphosphate (FUTP), its cytotoxic metabolites, both within normal and tumor cells.
