Antineoplastic drug, platinum derivative. Oxaliplatin is a stereoisomer where the central platinum atom is complexed with an oxalate ligand and diaminocyclohexane in trans-positions. Like other platinum compounds, oxaliplatin targets DNA by forming both inter- and intra-strand cross links which prevents DNA synthesis and subsequent replication. Oxaliplatin-DNA complexes are quickly formed at a maximum of 15 minutes (for cisplatin this process comes in two steps with a delayed 4-8 hour stage). Disruption of DNA synthesis results in inhibiting RNA and cellular protein synthesis. Oxaliplatin is effective in some cisplatin resistant cell lines.
