Antineoplastic drug. It a non-steroidal inhibitor of aromatase, an enzyme involved in the estrogen synthesis in postmenopausal women. Aromatase promotes conversion of androgens produced by adrenal glands (primarily, androstenedione and testosterone) into estrone and estradiol. Aromatase activity is inhibited by competitive binding to the enzymatic subunit, cytochrome P450 gem, which results in reduction of estrogen biosynthesis in all tissues, including those of estrogen-dependent tumors.
