It mechanism of action is due to the inhibition of guanosine nucleotide synthesis by selectively blocking inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase. It prevents the proliferation of T- and B- lymphocytes to a much greater extent than of other cells because lymphocytes are critically dependent for their proliferation on de novo synthesis of purines.
